Saturday's CHL News

Finally I have a chance to pick this up again and there has been lots of news.

The biggest news today is that we know which teams will represent the WHL in the Memorial Cup. It will be Vancouver (of course, the home team) and the other team will be Medicine Hat. By virtue of the Tigers win over the Calgary Hitmen, Medicine Hat has earned the right to play for the Cup. Congrats to the Tigers for their wonderful season.

In the OHL, last night was a big night too. In what surely was an upset, the Sudbury Wolves earned the right to face the Plymouth Whalers by defeating the Belleville Bulls. The Bulls are an excellent team and were actually my pick to play London in the OHL championship series. Well, I got neither team right, and the Plymouth/Sudbury league championship series will begin on Friday evening. The Wolves are expected to get back their most potent forward, overager Justin Donati by then, so it should be a good matchup. That said, Plymouth is a strong favourite in the series.

In the QMJHL, as expected Lewiston demolished Rouyn-Noranda in 4 straight games. The MAINEiacs are a powerful team and are expected to make the trip to Vancouver late next month. The other semi-final series, between Cape Breton and Val-d'Or , is the last still to be decided in the CHL. The Screaming Eagles lead the series 3 games to 2, with the next game to be played in Val-d'Or tomorrow evening.
